This coastal clean up is an event of many first- first time participating in coastal clean up, first time been to Pulau Ubin, first time cycling under heavy rain, first time to get onto the earliest mrt, first time to take an almost 2 hour bus ride in Singapore, first time been to Tampines 1.
Nevertheless, it was pretty fun.
Woke up at 5am, despite the fact that I slept at 3am, rush to the mrt station, took mrt down to Tampines. Another bus ride to Changi Jetty, bump boat to Ubin, cycle to Chek Jawa. After much travelling, finally, we (Yiu yan,Nikki and I) reached Chek Jawa at about 9am.
We were attached to Pei Hwa Secondary School students, ie. we are supposed to help them categorize the trash correctly. I didnt do much of the trash collecting. Most of the time, I was assisting them in recording the trash collected. Funny enough, they thought I am a teacher and keep calling me "Teacher! Teacher! teacher", even after I told them that I am NUS student. Hello kids, cant you tell I am not so much older than you all? Well, I wasnt really surprised. About 1 month ago, I went to a small warung (small food store) back in Simpang Renggam. Guess what?! The first thing the mak cik over there asked me was " Are you a cikgu (teacher) over here?". OMG! Mak Cik, aku bukan cikgu la. Aku masih belajar, masih muda. Back to that bunch of sec school kids. So there they went "teacher ah, what are you doing here?", "Teacher ah, why do you look so young?" etc. The whole clean up was kinda short coz we were late and the tide was already quite high. Overall, it was still a pleasant experience.
After the clean up, we cycled back to the maintown of Ubin, under heavy rain. As expected, we were all throughouly wet. While waiting for the rain to stop, we had lunch at a restaurant over there. Food was not bad.
It is nice to get out of the city and indulge in the serenity of small village. It is nice to sit on a bump boat, look at the waves, feel the sea breeze.
