4th week of Holiday ~ one-third of my holiday is gone!

Yep 1/3 of my holiday is gone with the wind :(

As usual, some updates from work!

I was doing administrative work for most of the time this week. Weekly minutes finalizing, Photos filtering and organizing, O&M manual tracking database. Yup, Engineers need to do admin work too. Face the truth. You cant survive in this modern world if you dunno how to use excel, words, power point etc.

Other than that, engineers need to have "Negotiating"skills too. A good example here. I was following up with this case where our neighbour (some chemical plant) requested for us to build 2 gates at our compound, so as to faciliate their movement. In short, for the sake of their convenience, they requested us to build 2 gates. I was there at the meeting with representatives from our side and their side. HAHA. In the end, we WON!! We are not compromising. Well, negotiating skill is fully exhibited in this case. Be firm with your stand. Your job is to secure the interest of your company.

Was "fortunate" enough to witness a case of power trip (OHNO>>>this is something really bad). According to contract, PS has a quota to meet for every half an hour time-- this means you must supply certain amount of electricity within that period of time, if not, penalty will be imposed. Thus, obviously, due to power trip, we cant fulfil the requirement. haiz. Everyone in the control room was so tense.

Something light here! Haha. I realize some germans are quite cute! Too bad they are too old for me :( "sightseeing" during work?? Well, i need to get back to working mode. Is it really true that the value of man appreciates with their age while woman depreciates?? This is really not fair.

Updates for French Open! Kutzenova is the woman's champion. Man's singles is on tonight. Federer will win! he should !

** All the pictures on vacation posted by my frenz on FB are making me green with envy. I need my vacation too!**

Signing off.
Adios :)

Third week of Holiday

Haha...It has been an eventful week.

Went down for Salvation Army tutoring session on Tuesday nite.

Out for steamboat dinner with pretty babe MK on Wed nite. She is still as pretty as ever.

New YOrk NEW YOrk Seafood Platter at West Coast Plaza on Thu Nite. Of coz with the accompany of my roomies, JO and BeiShi. Awesome Seafood Platter. COld Crab (Which I love most), deep fried fish Fillet (Fish & Co offers better fish dishes), Calamari Ring (Which i personally think it can be better), Fried Shrimps, and Salmon Salad (this is pretty good). Too bad, we forgot to take a picture of the seafood platter. This seafood platter is pretty different from the one from Fish & CO. THe one from Fish & Co comes with rice and awesome fish (really good) and mussels etc. Actually, personally I prefer the one from FIsh & CO. **of coz...it comes with RICE..wink wink** We chat till midnite. This brings back the sweet memories of mid nite talk in our cosy pig sty :)

Currently, there is a little tortoise in my room...Yep. Helping Jacky to look after his tortoise for 4 days. I have to admit that I am really bad with animals. Pls dun ask me to take care of your pets ok?

Wah XO tortoise food!!

I am also reading this book recently -- The Stolen CHild..Not bad after all

Last but not least, Sunday!!
Tennis in the morning. Cookie baking in the afternoon. We tried on the "fool proof" recipe--Choc Cornflake. Yep. Easy one.

OHno, weekend is gone. Back to work on monday. I really need a vacation to beach.

*French Open is up. Do watch if you have not. It is definitely as exciting as ever.*

Best News of The Week

Probably the best news of the week.
Exam result is out.
This time round I am pretty happy with it.
I guess I am just more comfortable with the modules taken this sem.
It will definitely be great if I can maintain same kind of standard for the next 2 years.

Hard work paid off.
Attending lectures, tutorials, plus doing all the assignments do help.
Shall not skip lectures anymore ***hopefully***

2nd week of work -- Still a true blue engineer

Ok.Now lets move on to the 2nd week of work.

Day 1:
I helped to set up a database to track the receiving of Operation and Maintanence (O&M) manuals. For your info, every single equipments and hardware used in a project do come with a very very thick and detailed O&M manual. Monday is usually a "not-tat-busy" day, as our week starts on Tuesday. Tuesday is the day when all the supervisors report the site progress. After site progress meeting, each and every single one will have their share of work to tackle, problems to troubleshoot.

Day 2:
The consortium invited PB and PS to inspect the pigging process for steam line. According to the consortium, yup, the steamline is pretty clean. Went down to the site to inspect the real situation using a boroscope (A snake-like-wire with a camera-equipped head). Haha....Just like how doctors put those small camera through your mouth into your stomach, we have a similar equipment to inspect the inner condition of pipelines. Well, as usual, weekly site progresss meeting in the afternoon. Things look fine. No big issues.

Day 3:
We received a report on the existing fire fighting hose being obstruct by the newly built pipe bridge. Thus, we went down to check out the real situation. Indeed, this cause fire fighting obstruction. Meeting is arranged to be held on Friday between the related parties.

Day 4:
I supposed to read up on the method statement on cooling water intake culvert system. Yep. This is to ensure that the work is being done according to the method stated. Didnt know that each work requires a method statement..whoooo

Day 5:
Went for the meeting on fire fighting obstruction. The initial plan is to extend the existing platform, with columns and steel bars forming the support for the platform. Interesting enough, such primitive way actually, or probably works(I didnt think that this idea requires a lot of knowledge). However, engineering calculation is still needed. AHA...accept the fact. Engineers cant run away from MATHEMATICS. Oh.again, it is FRIDAY. Yup, FRIDAY is supposed to be special, eg. T-shirt day, party day. We went out for lunch and bought fruits fruits and fruits for our afternoon tea cum fruits party. Mangosteen, Mango, Rambutan -- Awesome!

tats all for the 2nd week!
Signing off.

First week of work ~ True Blue Engineer

This is the edited version. If you have previously read something similar, you can choose to ignore this post...coz it is almost the same

To those who read my blog:

Sorry for deserting my blog for quite a while. Just ended my final exam. AND, finally holiday is here. Currenly, I am just a blue collar worker who works in Jurong Island, Power Seraya Power Plant. Things are doing great and I shall share my "1-week-load" of work experience here. The content might be a bit disorganized coz it is just simply too many things happening. Guess this will be a really long post. Bear with it ya!

Day 1
Whoever working in Jurong Island needs a pass. No unauthorized personnel is allowed in Jurong Island. No photography is allowed. Such strict regulations. DUH! Singapore is damn scared of Osama, Mas Selamat or whichever terrorist out there bombing this industrial hub.

Thus, being a newbie here, obviously, the 1st thing to do will be applying a pass. Jurong Island pass is not enough. I also need a power seraya power plant pass. Well, Security is pretty tight everywhere. OK, after all these necessary procedures, finally I m stepping on site. For your info, the site is so big that you will die working...We cycle around. Luckily, I know how to cycle and I am provided a bike. Hooray. I get to cycle everyday. Now, the noob newbie is given a small talk on how the power plant works. Site visit, touring or watever you name it is definitely part of the schedule too. The power plant is really "magnificient", "sophisticated", "High Tech". I am totally impressed. Thats the wonder of engineering.

Day 2
Attended weekly site progress meeting with different parties involved in the project. Some brief background. The owner of power seraya project is actually YTL corporation (Wah. M'sia rox la). My company is the owner's representative engineering firm. So we are responsibled to protect the interest of the owner. The general contractor (so called consortium in this case) is a collaboration between Samsung and Siemens. So do expect me to see many koreans and germans around. The subcontractor is Worley Parsons. Being in a real working world is definitely different from school. Here, every minute is money. Real big money. Meetings are never substance-less and it will definitely be effective, straight to the point. Since I am from environmental engineering major, the kind supervisors do involved me with the environmental issues. So, now I need to check for related regulations for certain process. OK! "HIGHLIGHT" of the day. I found a small cockroach in my lunch. Yaiks. However, I wasnt really traumatized. BUT, i did kill the appetite of my colleagues. Not to forget, I am now a certified safe worker. I went for some safety talk with the whole room of bangla, indian workers. Haha. 1 sticker on your helmet will makes u a certified worker. Well..hmm....

Day 3
Meetings again! My job for the week is to attend meetings.
Not a bad idea. I did get lots of info on how thing works. Really interesting.
To add on, as always, site is always a place for the male species. AND now i am truely convinced. For your info, I bet there are less than 10 females in the site. and yup, no female toilet in my office building. Argh, now i actually miss the day of wearing skirts and shorts.

Day 4
one whole room of brainees from all over the world. Germany, Korea, India, China, Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia. These brainees are having teleconferencing with big boss in Germany. This is the first time for me seeing how a teleconference works. Not to mention, there is a noob intern sitting at the side. Haha. Meetings didnt really killed me. In fact, I am glad that I can sit in for meetings. Do learnt quite a bit.

Day 5
Went down to National Environment Agency (NEA) with my colleagues to have a pre-consultation with the officers there. It is about some temporary steam venting system. For your info, this power plant also generates steam and they are going to sell the steam to PCS (Petro Chemical Singapore). According to contract, the operation should starts on 1 Sept. Thus, commisioning (some kind of performance test) must be done way before sept. However, PCS is not being coperative. They are not ready to receive the steam at the other end. So how's Powe Seraya gonna test out their system? Well, to protect the interest of Power Seraya, PB came out with this temporary steam venting system. If PS doesnt send out steam by 1sept, they are considered as breaching the contract. This means money loss. Also, by hook or by crook PS must do the commissioning by july. As complicated as this, yup, now everybody is playing "games". Try to delay each other, try to force ppl to fork out more money, trying to protect their own interest. To cut short, yup, we went down to consult about this temporary steam venting system, as it involves steam emission and noise pollution to a certain extent. OK. I would say the system is quite good. Thus, we got a green light to carry it out. Noise would be reduced using silencers and the temperature of the steam will be lowered using sort of diffuser.

Well, I do enjoy my work so far. The only regret is I think I didnt do much for my company. Shall be more proactive next week. Take intiative to help out. Hehe.

Long Long post. Hope it didnt bored you.

Till then. Adios :)
